We’re here! In association with Summer of Tech, we are delighted to announce the launch of a new initiative specifically for HR and Marketing students.
Summer of Biz an industry led, non-profit, volunteer-driven initiative focused on meeting the real needs of HR and Marketing students and employers looking for growth and development opportunities. Younger sibling to Summer of Tech , our goal is to deliver industry training to maximise work-readiness, increase student preparedness for work, and get more students hired for summer internships.
How did Summer of Biz come about?
One cold (probably) Wellington night, during a ‘What’s On My Mind HR’ (#WOMMHR) Twitter chat about what more could we do as an industry to bridge the gap for HR students and help them gain practical skills and experience, it was jokingly suggested it might be good if there was a similar programme to Summer of Tech, and, the penny dropped.
“I can’t get a job because I don’t have experience, I can’t get experience because I can’t find a job!”
So we did a bit of brainstorming and quickly decided that Marketing, due to the close relationship they have with HR (a blog for another day!) should be included, and pulled together a bunch of very passionate HR and Marketing industry folks to work out how we could best use our networks and experience to get this off the ground.
We’ve been very fortunate to partner with the wonderfully successful Summer of Tech, which is in its 10th year and has successfully upskilled thousands of tech students, along with the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency (WREDA), who have provided funding to launch the programme. Voila Summer of Biz was born!
You can find us at the Victoria University Commerce Careers expo on Thursday 16 March 2017, so make sure you come say hi!
Our first student event is on Tuesday 21st March where you can hear first hand from a panel of HR and Marketing industry experts, along with Summer of Tech alumni who will share first hand their career journeys and experience with the internship programme. It’s going to be a fun night so make sure you sign up.
